From My Brown Eyes

It’s gonna cost ya!

Before going natural I did not know that it is expensive. I think there is a bit of a misconception about women who have natural hair. I have heard people say that women either have natural hair or want natural hair because they are cheap. Granted, this may be nothing more than hearsay but I must set the record straight - natural hair is not a cheap keep.

I have nothing but good things to say about my natural hair. Most women feel the same and with all the gushing many forget to mention to others who are considering going down this route the cost. It is a bit of a hit to your wallet.

For a clearer understanding I like to compare it to organic food versus canned/boxed/junk food. The latter is always going to be cheaper. Most things that are healthier with better ingredients cost more but in my opinion, are worth it. When making the decision to have natural hair it is a lifestyle change. There is a chance once this lifestyle change is made that every hair product you used before, 9 times out of 10, will have to go in the trash. After my BC, I had to get rid of everything I once used and buy new hair products.

Natural hair requires products without Sulfate, harsh Alcohol, Mineral Oil, and Glycol. Most of those ingredients will either dry out your hair or damage it in ways that will not contribute to having healthy hair. Unfortunately, a large majority of the products in my bathroom prior to my BC (i.e. Herbal Essence, Pantene, etc.) had all of those ingredients. So I had to Google some products and then go shopping.

  • My Costs for a shampoo product before BC: about $4. After: about $9.
  • Cost for a conditioner before BC: again about $4. After: about $25-$40 (this is for a deep conditioner that I use weekly, a regular conditioner for daily washes, and a leave-in conditioner)

Miscellaneous products that I had to begin using:

  • Moisturizer- $10 and up
  • Spray (to de-frizz and/or detangle) - about $10
  • Curl definer (as I like to call - the tamer) -between $10-$25

Depending on the brand of the product the price will be more. Carol’s Daughter, Miss Jessie’s, Kinky Curly - these are all pretty top-notch natural hair products and they will make your hair look like a million bucks but it’s gonna cost ya!

To be continued…
