From My Brown Eyes

This belongs to a writer, an editor, a journalist, a Columbia Graduate School of journalism student, and a natural hair woman named Shonitria.
For the first time I tried coil outs. I love it. My mom on the other hand, her response: “you want dreads now!?” The coils are by far my favorite natural hairstyle. Coils last a long period of time and the maintenance is a breeze. The best part, when I finally took the coils out they turned out amazing- beautiful springy curls! I recommend this look to every natural girl out there! How to get it, easy.

Follow these steps:
1. Wash your hair. (hidden step: please do not towel dry hair - if your hair has trouble retaining moisture like my own - just let it air dry)
2. Section hair with a wide tooth comb while hair is still wet/damp
3. Using product of choice (I used Miss Jessie’s Curl Meringue) put a dime sized amount in hands and apply to hair sections before
3. Twirling hair around finger until it is completely twisted from root to end. 4.Release coil. Then repeat until entire head is coiled.

Now I believe the only downside to this style is that the coils do look like dreads once finished. Although, they keep well the next day. They are also easy to wash: just massage conditioner gently through coils and scalp during co-wash.

As you can see with the picture of me above once you take the coils apart they look great. Try it and I think you will love it too!
